I just saw the world premiere of Hope McIntyre's "EDEN", shown at the Asper Centre for Theatre and Film. After seeing the read through three years ago, this version was definitely polished and well crafted, composed by a cast of fine actors; not one bad performance among them. The set was minimal and clean with three huge screens above, casting the images of characters broadcasting their messages, good or evil. The whole message I got was how we treat our beliefs as knowledge, we create a good guy and bad guy, seeing ourselves as the good and anyone else who opposes us as bad. Young, old, Native, white, whatever: We're good and they're bad. The story is set fifty years into the future but the message was present-day relatable. No matter how technologically advanced we become, we're still primitive when it comes to what we believe the other person is. With 9/11 ten and a half years ago, we're still hoping that terrorism will stop, but seems like it'll go on as long as the world has people on it. That said, Loved the set, loved the actors and the message in the story.
